What You're Missing on Flickr

That's right friends. Did you know there's a group in Flickr called Women's Eyebrows? We know this, because we own it and run it. And we invite photographers like Dodik85, who created the gem above, to add their pictures to the group. And so far almost 100 pictures have been contributed.

So check it out. Join in the (mostly innocent) eyebrow fun.

Ania Bukstein's Orthodox Eyebrows

Israeli actress Ania Bukstein (seen at right below, and also confusingly called Ania Bokstein in some, but not most of the film's official publicity) is in the new flick The Secrets. The plot involves Orthodox Jewish girls and, well, secrets. Fine. The main thing is that the eyebrows are practically busting out of the screen in the trailer – which is where we grabbed these stills.


This is a ritual bath, and a fine way for a good Jewish girl to behave. At right is actress Michal Shtamler:

Veils for Peace! Insh'Allah!

In the past, I posted about niqabs and hijabs. But I know that my North American counterparts just call them "veils" most of the time.

I don't care what the hell you call them. Just look on these brows and enjoy.

This is great stuff.

Niqabs for Peace

In an earlier post, I talked about the hijab. Now it's time to think about the niqab.

The niqab, or face veil, is part of the hijab.

The Arabic is نِقاب. Say it: نِقاب.

I found a bizarre web site that offered skeevy, low-resolution close ups of Arab women's eyes, peering from behind the niqab. Herewith some of the less egregious photos...and a couple of others, less sketchy.

The second one doesn't have a niqab.

So sue me.

Hijabs for Peace

The hijab is a headscarf or covering worn by women in Islamic countries. It is from the arabic term for "cover" (for those scoring at home: حجاب).

In the interests of world understanding, here are some photos to enhance your awareness of other cultures. Later we'll learn about the niqab, or face-veil.
